About Goodyear

Like the tyres of other brands such as Pirelli and Michelin, you know Goodyear mainly from Formula 1. Many tyre brands from the car industry are also found in the bicycle industry. This is because car tyres are often of very high quality. A tyre brand that gets top marks in the car world obviously has a good range of tyres for bicycles! Goodyear makes tyres that focus on aspects such as improved rolling resistance, grip, durability and weight reduction. Whether you are a competitive cyclist like me, who wants a competitive edge, or a recreational cyclist who wants to get the best possible performance out of the bike, Goodyear has a tyre to suit everyone's needs.

The tyre "Eagle F1 R Ultra High Performance"

To be honest, this is the first time I will be driving Goodyear tyres. Previously, I always used to ride 25mm tyres but nowadays 28mm is the standard. That's why I chose this 28mm variant this time. The colour is available in black or with a "transparent" sidewall. I go for black!

You also have the choice of riding tubeless or with inner tubes. Unfortunately, I ride Roval wheels which are not tubeless capable and I am left to ride with an inner tube.

The Eagle F1 R Ultra High-Performance all-round racing tyre was developed at the highest level of cycling. The tyre is ideally suited to me. I am looking for low rolling resistance without sacrificing balanced grip on wet and dry.

You can see that in the centre, the tread is completely smooth, while the shoulders of the tyre have grooves. This means for maximum speed straight ahead and for cornering grip. The grooves are also designed to shed water in wet conditions.

Easy to assemble

The tyres are very easy to fit. With tyres from other brands, it is sometimes quite a struggle to get them on the rim. With these tyres, everything goes smoothly. I mount the tyres with a standard inner tube.

In races, I sometimes choose to fit a TPU inner tube to create even lower rolling resistance. See the webshop for this: https://www.omnibikeparts.com/nl_NL/fietsbanden/fiets-binnenbanden

Driving experience with the Goodyear Eagle F1 R

From the first impression, I am super positive. With a tyre pressure of around 5.5 bar, I am on the road. I definitely notice a difference because of this with a wider tyre and less tyre pressure. Much more comfort which you do need these days with a hard carbon bike. So the tyre has good shock absorption. The tyre rolls nicely and is sufficiently supple to maintain good grip on bumps and turns.

Reliable tyre

After more than 1,500 kilometres, I have zero punctures. That is a nice touch and there is nothing to be said for it either. The two small wear dots that are an indicator of tyre wear look otherwise unchanged, so the expectation is that many more puncture-free kilometres to follow.

Conclusion

Goodyear Eagle F1 R is a great light running tyre and with its 28mm width it is also very comfortable. For this price, I couldn't find a better one.

Compared to the top competition tyres, you could call this tyre slightly "stickier". This immediately suggests that the grip is in good shape and it is. As a result, you have to sacrifice a tiny bit on rolling resistance but most importantly, they wear remarkably slowly. Because the tyres hardly wear out, you can keep cycling on them for a long time.
